The New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) is comprised of five regions with volunteer and paid firefighters spread throughout the country. As well as responding to a wide range of emergency situations, the NZFS is focussed on fire safety and prevention in NZ communities.

In November 2015, Cabinet agreed to bring urban and rural fire services together into one unified fire services organisation, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). The new organisation will be a merger of 40+ rural fire authorities, the National Rural Fire Authority, and the New Zealand Fire Service (which are both part of the New Zealand Fire Service Commission).

This is a great opportunity in the Fire Service for a senior payroll practitioner with a sound background in HR/Payroll systems.

This is a new position where you will have a key role in coordinating the work of the payroll team as deputy to the Payroll Manager. You will ensure calculations are correct and comply with employment agreements and legislative requirements. Ensure appropriate and timely customer service delivery, proactively identifying opportunities to improve systems and processes, and testing payroll system changes.

You’ll also be responsible for providing mentoring and training Payroll Coordinators. Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A history of achievement in the delivery of quality payroll services preferably in a complex payroll environment
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of New Zealand employment and payroll related legislation and accounting systems and practices
  • A strong customer service focus
  • Keen attention to detail with a systematic and analytical approach
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Advanced MS Excel skills
  • Experience and knowledge with PS Enterprise is desirable.
