CORRECTIONS OFFICERS – Tongariro Prison

Future need for Male Corrections Officers to join our team!

Our Corrections Officers come from all walks of life bringing a wide range of skills and life experience with them, but what they have in common is the genuine belief that people can change. They understand that small, daily interactions can role model positive behaviours to our offenders.

Our Corrections Officers tell us that one of the great parts of their job is working in a close knit team, the sense of whanau that comes from a team of people who want to change lives.

Corrections Officers serve the public by;

  • maintaining safety and security within the prison
  • motivating and encouraging prisoners to attend rehabilitation programmes, training and work.

It's more challenging, more interesting and more rewarding than you can imagine.

The role of a Corrections Officer is a varied one and one of the responsibilities of this position is searching, this could be searching a cell or a prisoner via a rub-down or strip search. Tongariro Prison is an all-male prison and operational requirements mean that we have a future need for male staff. While female applicants will also be considered they will be put into a talent pool until the prison has vacancies for additional female staff.

Being a Corrections Officer means you will;

  • work in shifts on a 24/7 roster
  • wear a uniform and protective gear like stab resistant body armour
  • need to be fit and pass a pre-employment fitness test
  • have a clean police check
  • need to complete medical and drug tests before an offer of employment is made
  • Also need a clean driver licence and a first aid certificate

Safety is our number one priority, so the training is intensive and starts from day one. You'll need to be 'up for it' as we put you through your paces to make sure you have what it takes to work face to face with our offenders.

All applications must be submitted online via our recruitment system. This can be done by clicking on the 'Begin' button below to start your application. Please note: Applications that are emailed directly will NOT be considered.
