About Volunteer Wellington

Volunteer Wellington is a hub of community activity in the Wellington region with offices in Wellington CBD, Porirua and Lower Hutt. We work with approximately 400 community organisations and recruit and refer more than 2700 volunteer seekers and fcailitate annually to boost the capacity and capability of the community and voluntary sector. We provide a comprehensive professional development programme to support best practice in the community sector and advocate for diversity and inclusiveness in the volunteer workforce so that volunteering is accessible to everyonel. Our Employee Volunteering programme connects business teams with our community members.

Job tasks and responsibilities

Provide an in-depth service for clients with complex needs that will prepare them for paid employment and enable them to contribute to the community

  • To work with selected community organisations to identify positions that are suitable for the client group and to ensure they have an understanding of the needs and motivations of volunteer seekers requiring work experience.
  • To follow-up, monitor and support the client group who have come through Volunteer Wellington and our branches Volunteer Hutt and Volunteer Porirua, in a professional, supportive and competent manner.
  • To ensure the clients achieve their personal objectives for the placements and that all agreed targets are met.
  • To establish monitoring and evaluation data collection systems to measure outcomes and evaluate the programme.
  • To accurately record data and 'stories' about the clients on Volunteer Wellington's database.
  • To build relationships with mental health services and other relevant agencies
  • To participate in seminar presentations to promote the value of volunteering

Skills and experience

  • Understanding of mental health recovery and have established networks with mental health consumers and professionals.
  • Case management experience of assessment, monitoring, planning, advocacy and evaluation.
  • Understanding of evaluation process
  • Excellent oral and written communication.This means to be friendly and professional, informative and able to build trust and to have the right skills to acquire the appropriate amount of personal and developmental detail.
  • A positive, encouraging – and also sensitive - manner is required.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • An ability to 'spot' and record success stories and the positive impact volunteering has on the clients lives.
  • The ability to listen astutely and identify when there are issues which need to be addressed.
  • Proficient problem solving skills
  • Ability to learn quickly about the depth and breadth of our community member base in order to make appropriate referral suggestions
  • Effective management and organisational skills
  • A high skill level in the use of computers.
  • A methodical approach and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in the Community and Voluntary sector
  • Applicants must have a current NZ driver's licence and access to a vehicle.
  • The successful applicant will be required to have a police check.
