Battered Women's Trust are seeking a highly skilled person to work as part of a multi-agency, integrated response to family harm. This position is for a Whanau Support Worker, providing support and case management to families assessed as medium risk of family harm. There may also be cases where there has been a decrease from high risk factors.

Ideal Person:

This person will be a professional with sound experience in the family violence field along with knowledge and experience that allows them to approach the work in a way that is whanau-centric, non-judgemental, and that seeks to determine and respond to the family and whanau's best interests and needs at the time.

You will need to work within the inter-agency framework with a focus on professional collaborative interventions. Delivering culturally appropriate and responsive services is also a key element of the role.

Key Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Understands the dynamics of family violence including perpetrator typologies.
  • Understands immediate as well as cumulative, and complex trauma.
  • Has understanding of developmental impact on children exposed to family harm.
  • Can articulate and speak to various forms of family harm and subsequent indicators.
  • Has robust knowledge of the scope, skills and resources of statutory and NGO Family Violence response agencies for perpetrators, victim partners and children.
  • Capacity to assess whole of whanau risk/needs.
  • Demonstrates culturally effective responding and/or links to appropriate resources.
  • Engaging with the longer term in mind.
  • Maintains accurate case records and written accounts to demonstrate sound placement of accountability for violence and victim resistance.


This is a permanent position of 40 hours per week, flexible hours of work are required along with rostered weekend days.
