The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is responsible for maintaining price stability and promoting a sound and efficient financial system. The Bank has operational independence in implementing monetary policy, with the Economics Department playing an important role by generating regular forecasts and analysis that form the basis of monetary policy decisions.

We are seeking an experienced economist to join the Modelling team in the Economics Department as an Economic Adviser.

The Modelling team has a strong focus on developing and maintaining economic models and ensuring they are used effectively to inform forecasts and to provide analytical foundations for policy decision making.

Working within the Modelling team you will be expected to provide thought leadership, make a substantial contribution to the development of policy and the Bank?s analytical frameworks, draft and present material for the Bank?s policy committees, lead projects and provide guidance and coaching to colleagues.

An understanding of central bank policy issues, macro-modelling and experience in open economy macroeconomics is also desirable.

Successful applicants will have the following:

  • A post-graduate degree in economics and substantial experience presenting analytical insights directly to senior management and policy committees.
  • A solid understanding of macroeconomics and the key issues facing New Zealand and the global economy
  • At least one of the ability to: develop and maintain DSGE models with a small open-economy focus; develop macro-econometric models to provide policy insights or improve macro forecasts; use micro-data to inform the conduct of monetary policy.
  • A collaborative approach that draws on the knowledge and skills of colleagues and other stakeholders, and supports the work of others
  • The ability to communicate with, inform and influence a range of audiences, verbally and in writing
