Confucius Institute Director
Canterbury Canterbury New Zealand
University of Canterbury

Confucius Institute Director (Contractor)

  • Part-time
  • Two-plus years contract role

The Confucius Institute (CI) at the University of Canterbury is a jointly established venture between the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) and Wuhan, China, and in partnership with Hanban (Office of the Chinese Language Council International, Beijing). The CI is committed to making Chinese language and culture teaching resources and services more readily available to New Zealand schools, organisations and members of the public, which meets the demands of Chinese learners and contributes to cultural diversity and understanding. CIs are generally hosted by high ranking universities worldwide.

The University of Canterbury has an exciting part-time opportunity for an individual to be the Director of our CI. This is a two year contract (possibly longer) which is responsible for providing leadership and management services to the CI, including managing the physical and financial resources of the institute, and maintaining relationships with the CI/UC partner institution HUST. This leadership will also include determining opportunities for the CI to be financially self-supporting and initiating actions to achieve this, as well as recommending the best position of the CI within UC structures to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Ideally, we are seeking a contractor with a management and financial experience, who has current knowledge of China, is familiar with Chinese culture and China relations, and, preferably, is able to speak Chinese (although this is not essential).
